How are computers employed in an Ophthalmologic Hospital?

A young IT student recently asked me what skills are needed to enter IT in an eye hospital.  He also wanted to know what hospital employees use a computer for in the eye hospital, for what “stuff”.

I thought this would be a great discussion to have here.  At the very least, to give and get guidance to new IT students or career changers.

You can keep patient records, including medical charts and records on a computer. You can also schedule appointments and do billing on a medical office computer. Some medical offices communicate with patients via email and/or an online website.
